Modern Foreign Languages

At SPSL we teach French or German in Junior Cycle.

In 1st Year you will study French or German from September to October and then you sample the other language from November to December. You will then make a choice between French or German having completed a common assessment in both languages and will continue to study your chosen language up to the end of Junior Cycle.

In learning a modern language, you will engage with the 4 main skills: oral, aural, reading comprehension and written production. Topics studied include: the area where you live, school life and leisure activities.

What is the MFL Junior Cycle exam like?

In MFL:

  • you will listen to and answer questions on conversations, news items etc. in French/German
  • you will read and answer questions on texts like advertisements, articles, recipes and celebrity profiles in French/German
  • you will write personal blogs in French/German
  • you will maintain a personal Student Language Portfolio throughout the 3 years of Junior Cycle
  • you will undertake 2 Classroom Based Assessments (CBA) in 2nd & 3rd year and in 3rd year complete an Assessment Task which is worth 10% of your final grade.

You will take the Junior Cycle MFL final examination (2-hour duration) at Common Level.

Below are some photos of the Modern Foreign Languages students visiting Knocknagree National School. The winners of the European Languages poster competition were presented with their prizes. The primary school students also took part in a French lesson. Credit goes to SPSL students for their participation and enthusiasm. The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit. They were accompanied by their teacher Ms. Kelly.

TY German students visited the 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils for an introductory lesson in German. Tiarna, Katelynn, Sarah and Fiona, one of our international students from Germany, were accompanied by their teachers Ms. Cooper & Ms. Davern.

Merci & Vielen Dank to Knocknagree NS for extending such a warm welcome to our group.
