Transition Year is an optional one year programme in SPSL that provides a bridge to students enabling them to make the transition from Junior Cycle to Senior Cycle.
The aim of the Transition Year Programme is to promote the personal, emotional, social, aesthetic and vocational development of students and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society. In Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, there is a strong emphasis on skills-based learning in Transition Year and on guiding students towards taking responsibility for their own learning.
SPSL's TY programme offers a broad educational experience with a view to the attainment of increased maturity before proceeding to further study. Work experience is a central part of the programme as are the many extra-curricular activities and outings in which the students participate.
The comprehensive TY programme offered at Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra aims to improve skills and encourage maturity by providing a variety of opportunities to allow for:
·the discovery of personal strengths
·learning about leadership, co-operation and dealing with conflict
·working as part of a team
·developing enterprising skills
·sample and discovery of new subjects
·making informed choices on Leaving Certificate subjects
·building a solid foundation for the Leaving Certificate
·knowledge of the working world
·discovery of career opportunities
As a result students explore their own talents and abilities beyond the classroom and can be expected to take on responsibility for themselves and their futures.
The TY curriculum is a balance between the academic and the non-academic and is regularly reviewed and assessed by both teachers and students. As a result subjects on offer are subject to change and revision each year.
Assessment
A variety of methods are used to chart the students' progress. These include regular projects, tests, certification and oral presentations.
